Opatów 1770: The holy Maggid of Kozienice was born.
Rabbi Yisrael Szapszanewicz Hopsztajn, known by his magnum opus Avodas Yisrael, was born in Apt [Opatów, Poland] to R’ Shabsai and Perl. Initially, he lived in Ostrovtse [Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Poland], until he was appointed as dayan and maggid meisharim–preacher, in Kozienice. “The Koznitzer Maggid”, as he was known, was one of the four great disciples of the great Rebbe, Reb Melech of Lizensk [Leżajsk, Poland].
