Mattersdorf, 1802: A fire destroyed the Jewish quarter.
This event is recorded by the rav of Mattersdorf [Mattersburg] at that time, Rabbi Moshe Schreiber, known as the Chassam Sofer. Not long thereafter he was appointed as rav of the nearby PreΓburg [Bratislava]. As he records it, many people lost their homes, and some of their fortunes. People from the nearby cities sent in donations to support their brethren in Mattersdorf. The Chassam Sofer, in his responsa, tries to figure out a fair way to split the donations between the people.
