Artist rendition of the Royal Palace in Shushan

Today is 30 days before one can start reading the Megillah.

It is interesting to note, the locations in the Megillah are very detailed: 1) Shaar HaMelech—palace gate, 2) outer court of the royal palace, 3)  inner court of the royal palace, facing the king’s palace, [4) king’s sleep quarters] 5) Beis haMelech—king’s palace, 6) Beis haMalchus, 7) Beis haNashim—harem, Beis haNashim sheini—second harem, and the harem’s court 10) Beis Mishte haYayin—symposium, 11) Ginas haBisan—palace garden, 12) Chatzar Ginas haBisan—court of palace garden.

The question which arises is ‘why bother with the details’!?

We can appreciate these details today as the foundations of the palace in Shushan survived, and all the above locations can easily be recognised! Now this gives us a contemporary vision into the Megillah which was written around 2.5 millenia years ago.

See image for the locations. [13 is the Apadana, column court]
