Simon Sofer

Cracow, 1883: Rabbi Shimon Sofer passed away.

It is interesting to note, Galician communities in his time were split between Chassidim, Polish Ashkenazim, and Maskillim. Therefore the larger communities, like Cracow, found it difficult to appoint a rav, who should be accepted by all fractions of the community. R’ Shimon Sofer, managed just that. Although eventually the Maskilim realized that they had underestimated him by far.
