Gorlice Holocaust Memorial

Sighet 1858: The Jewish community welcomed their new rav, Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum.

R’ Zalman Leib’s candidacy actually came about in an unconventional manner. He was rav in Gorlice, Lesser Poland, when one of the leaders of the Sighet [Sighetu Marmaţiei, Romania] community died, R’ Zalman Leib was invited to come over and give a eulogy, which he did. The people in Sighet were so taken over by this eulogy, that they decided to accept him to take over the mantle of leadership in Sighet. On 18 Tamuz R’ Zalman Leib arrived back in Sighet as the new rav of the community.
