Leghorn/Livorno, Italy

Livorno, 1742: The city was hit with an Earthquake.

This earthquake was the last of a series of small earthquakes, which started a few weeks earlier.

The Jewish quarter miraculously survived the earthquake with no damage. This day, 22 Shevat, was instituted as a “Purim Sheini”, which started as a day of fast and prayer. On Shabbos, they said Hallel haGadol – “Praise to Hashem, for He is good, His steadfast love is eternal.”
