Jerusalem, 1765: Rabbi Avraham Azulai passed away.

R’ Avraham Azulai, is the author of the kabbalistic work, Chessed LeAvraham. He was the great-grandfather of Rav Chida.

Rav Chida writes: “He was from Fez, and his family originated from the sages of Castile.” The family left Castile, at the expulsion of Spain, and headed straight to Fez, Morocco. From there they eventually made their way to Israel, with a stopover in Caphutkia [Pelusium, Egypt] where temporarily they disembarked the boat. A storm broke out and the boat capsized and sank with all their belongings. Therefore, R’ Avraham incorporated an image of a boat in his signatures.
