Jerusalem, 1765: Rabbi Yitzchak Zerachyah Azulai passed away.
R’ Yitzchak Zerachyah Azulai was the father of the Chid”a, and a grandson of Rabbi Avraham Azulai
R’ Avraham Azulai, is the author of the kabbalistic work, Chessed LeAvraham. He was the great-grandfather of Rav Chida.
Rav Chida writes: “He was from Fez, and his family originated from the sages of Castile.” The family left Castile, at the expulsion of Spain, and headed straight to Fez, Morocco. From there they eventually made their way to Israel, with a stopover in Caphutkia [Pelusium, Egypt]. During the stop over, a storm broke out. The boat capsized and sank with all their belongings. Therefore, R’ Avraham incorporated an image of a boat in his signatures.
