Cracow, 1700: Rabbi Heschel Tzoref passed away.
Rabbi Heshchel, was a great kabbalist, and the author of the known manuscript, which made its way to the Baal Shem Tov of Mezbizh [Medzhybizh, Ukraine].
It’s important to note, that in this period, there were 3 gedolei Yisrael with very similar names:
- Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel, son of R’ Yakov of Lublin. He was his father’s successor in Lublin and thereafter the rav of Cracow, known as “R’ Heschel of Cracow.”
- Rabbi Yehoshua Charif, son of R’ Yosef from Vilna. He was rav of Cracow, and author of the sefer Maginei Shlomo.
- Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Tzoref, son of R’ Yosef from Vilna. He was not rav of Cracow, but learned all day in the Megaleh Amukos Shul in Cracow.
