Lemberg, 1667: The Turei Zahav passed away.
Rabbi David HaLevi, renowned for his commentary Turei Zahav, was born in 1586. This information is derived from a discussion between his son, Rabbi Yeshayah of Komarno, and the apostate Shabsai Zvi. Rabbi Yeshayah was tasked by his father, Rabbi David HaLevi, to investigate Shabsai Zvi’s character and intentions. He met with Shabsai Zvi on the 24th of Tamuz in 1666, a date that Shabsai Zvi had proclaimed as Shabbas HaGadol. During this encounter, Shabsai Zvi inquired about Rabbi Yeshayah’s father, to which Rabbi Yeshayah replied, “My father is very old, being 80 years of age, and he’s very weak in his hands and feet.”
