Venice, 1590: Rabbi Leon de Modena Got Married

Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Modenam a.k.a. Leon de Modena, walked down the aisle, to the Chuppah in Venice, marrying his first cousin Rachel, the daughter of his mother’s sister Gioja. Originally he was engaged to Rachel’s elder sister Esther, and the wedding date was set to be on 13 Sivan 1590, but sadly Esther got very sick and the wedding got canceled, and alas, Esther died a week later. He then got betrothed to Esther’s sister Rachel, and they got married on Friday Parashas Korach.

Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Modena authored ‘Yom Ze Yehi Mishkal’, the poem we start Yom Kippur Katan.
