Cracow, 1571: The first volume, Orach Chayim, of Shulchan Aruch, edited by the Remuh, came off the press!

Four years earlier, the Shulchan Aruch, by Rabbi Yosef Karo (1488–1575), appeared on the Jewish bookshelf. When the chief rabbi of Cracow, the young Rabbi Moshe Isserles (c.1542–1572), saw it, he realized that it did not include the Ashkenazic customs. Therefore he added his notes and gave it in to be reprinted.  On 25 Kislev, the 1st day of Chanukah, the printers started their work, which lasted until the following 9 Adar.
