Cracow, 1596: The doctor Rabbi Yisrael Shmuel Kalahora passed away.
The Kalahora family was quite a famous one in Cracow, through the 16 and 17th century. Their origins were from Calahorra, Spain.
The family was practicing medicine, serving the Jewish community. Although Christians were not allowed to use the services of their fellow Jews, it seems that the elite ignored this edict, and the family served as private doctors for the local priests and nobility.
R’ Yisrael Shmuel authored the sefer Yismach Yisrael.
