Amsterdam, 1635: The Ashkenazic community welcomed their new rav to town.

This welcome wasn’t just another welcome, it was one of the famous ones of our history. Especially, as in honor of this occasion, some members of the community minted special medals, with an engraving of the new rav, Rabbi Elazar from Brody, known as the Maase Rokeach.

As a contemporary report claims, the rav was on this occasion 50 years old.

More about his specific age at the time, see our article “The Age-Old Question,” Kankan issue 6.
