Today, 223 years ago, in the year 1797, the Vilna’er Gaon, passed away in Vilnius.
To mark the first century from his passing, a portrait of him was published. I have noticed a few interesting things about it. Firstly, we can see he is wearing “strokkes”, something which is unique today only to some Chassidishe Rebbes – although his wasn’t from velvet. What caught my interest the most, was the chronometer. Why the artist hung an English chronometer on his bookcase, causes one to ponder!
