Today, 256 years ago, in the year 1764, Rabbi Yonathan Eybeschütz passed away in Altona.

R’ Yonathan was a ‘Ba’al Shem’, meaning he practiced Kabbalah. In his time there was an epidemic going around in which kimpetorins–women in childbirth died. R’ Yonathan gave out amulets for these women. These amulets eventually caused the famous controversy between him and Rabbi Yaacov Emden.
